WinXP from *within* OS X

Screenshot of Parallels Workstation in Action

After yesterday’s Boot Camp excitement, I tried installing Parallela Workstation today. This will also allow me to install Windows on an Intel Mac, but instead of having to reboot into Windows, Parallels Workstation works just like VirtualPC, you run Windows within a virtual machine environment from within OS X.

The advantage over the solution offered by Apple? No need to reboot your system. This will be handy if I want to fire up Windows just to run a quick application or to lodge my tax returns. Parallels Workstation also supports other flavour of Windows and Linux.

Since it runs in a virtual environment from within OS X, the performance is far from running Windows natively on the machine using Apple’s solution. However, the performance is still very good. On a dual core Intel iMac 1.83Ghz with 512 MB of RAM, Windows XP is still very usable. I have not installed any programs so far, but general OS navigation, opening files and web browsing using Internet Explorer have been very pleasant so far.

Mac now boots Windows - Officially

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

Apple announces Boot Camp today. Now booting into WinXP on an Intel Mac is possible and officially sanctioned by Apple. Smart move this one. With the possibility of booting into Windows, Apple’s hardware sales will just sky rocket.

The guys here at work were excited. We started installing WinXP using Boot Camp on 17″ Intel iMac with a 1.83 Ghz processor and 512 MB of RAM. The installation process was very painless. This Mac is fresh out of the box, so we updated it to 10.4.6, downloaded Boot Camp and followed the instructions in the readme. About less than An hour later, WinXP was booting up. I timed it and from the moment of the Mac start-up chime to the Windows desktop appearing, it took 45 secs. The first thing we installed? An anti-virus. :)

Mighty Mouse vs Intellimouse

Friday, September 2nd, 2005

I don’t like Apple’s Mighty Mouse. Aestically, it looks very good. Size is pretty much a preference thing so I won’t comment.

However, the scroll button feels flimsy and due to the touch sensitive buttons, some of my clicks don’t register, which can get very annoying. This also means that the buttons don’t work independently. I currently use a Microsoft Intellimouse with the tilt wheel. I have the middle click button setup to work expose the Finder desktop via Exposé. When I want to drag a file from the desktop to an application I’m working in, I click the middle button to expose the desktop, left click and drag the file in question and then click on the middle button again to return to my application while still holding on to my left button. This allows me to drop the file into my application. You cannot do this with the Mighty Mouse, which is a shame.

I also prefer the scroll wheel on the Intellimouse than the scroll button on the MM. The Mighty Mouse’s scroll button feels flimsy and cheap. It’s also harder to control than the scroll wheel which seems to have a nice “drag” to it. However, side scrolling is better on the Mighty Mouse as the one on the Intellimouse does not scroll continuously horizontally.

Of course, the Intellimouse is also cheaper. ;p

Hack your iPod

So it’s bound to happen. Some guy figured out how to extract the graphics from the iPod’s firmware and a new wave of hack your iPod customisation begins.

Too bad the software is only for Windows.

Zen and Tired Thumbs

Saturday, November 6th, 2004

Creative Singapore is having a trade in deal. They are taking in iPods for a zen Micro.

I’m really amused by this sentence on the page.

Tired of going around in circles with your iPod?

I actually think the iPod’s wheel interface is the best for navigating long lists. Imagine scrolling 2000 songs with that vertical pad on the Zen and let’s see how tired your thumbs get.

Universal Remote to Turn Off TVs

Wednesday, October 20th, 2004

Tv-Be-Gone is a nifty gadget. According to this article in Wired, it sends out different codes that will turn almost any television off.

Now, if only this will work on those damn TVMobiles in Singapore’s public buses.

Beng your iPod

Sunday, September 26th, 2004

Remember how the Ah Bengs used to dress up mobile phone so that it lights up like a disco?

I remember during my days of National Service where the ceilings of my bunk would light up with multiple flashing patterns emitted from the laser pointers that were attached to my bunkmate’s mobile phone.

Now you can too with Griffin Technology’s latest offering; the iBeam. However, it just provides a standard flashlight and laser pointer. When the laser will start beaming patterns on the wall that moves and flashes in time with the music, put me in for 1 order.
