AVCHD Support in Final Cut Pro

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Final Cut Studio 2.0.1 now supports AVCHD in Final Cut Pro 6. However, if you’re using a PowerPC Mac, you’re shit out of luck as this only works on Intel Macs.

Formulate your PDFs

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

The problem with PDFs is that when you get a form online, it’s seldom editable, which means that you’ll have to print it out, fill it in, scan it back to your computer before e-mailing it back.

Formulate is a neat freeware that solves this problem. You load in a PDF, type what you want in a little text field at the bottom of the page and then click on the PDF where you want the text to appear and voila, instant neatness.

Orientation aware resizing in Photoshop

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

I’ve banged up a Photoshop script that resizes your image according to its orientation. I use it as part of a batch process to convert photos to a more web friendly size. As the opening of scripts can recorded as part of an action, this script can be incorporated into part of a larger work flow.

By default, it resizes a landscape picture to 800 by 533 (3:2) and a portrait picture to 533 by 800. This can be changed by opening the script in a text editor and changing the values in the docRef.resizeImage functions.

Doing this:

docRef.resizeImage(400,600,72)

will resize the image to width:400, height:600 at dpi:72.

To install this script, copy it to the Presets > Scripts folder where Photoshop is located and restart Photoshop.

Spellchecker for Firefox

Monday, December 5th, 2005

One thing that has always stopped me from using Firefox is the absence of a native spell checker. I like how incorrect spellings show up instantly in Safari. Then I discovered Spellbound, a spelling extension for Firefox.

So I downloaded the G4 optimsed build of Firefox, whacked on the Spellbound extension only to see it crack the shits on me. Turns out that to install Spellbound, you must install:

  1. Spellbound Extension
  2. Mozilla spell check libraries for Firefox 1.0+
  3. Dictionaries for Mozilla

Once you’ve got these installed, right clicking in a text box should show a “Check Spelling” option.

Nice little iTunes plugin

Monday, March 14th, 2005

Tired of iTunes’ usual visual plugins? Jewelcase is a neat one that someone from the Appletalk Australia forum discovered that is absolutely free of charge. It’s also a visual plugin for iTunes but it shows a virtual CD case in 3D with the album cover as well as the track listings from the album on the back.

Synergy2: 1 keyboard/mouse, 2 machines

Tuesday, November 9th, 2004

Just came across this neat little software called Synergy2. What it does is to allow the user to control 2 different machines with one set of input device. For example, with the software installed and running as a server on my Powerbook and running it as a client on my WinXP machine, I can move my mouse cursor off the edge of my Mac’s screen (the edge is user definable) and I gain control of the cursor on my Windows box. Pretty cool.
